This Paul Sykes Vocal Seminar is a combination of Power Point visuals, Practical demonstration, live coaching and audio examples. Designed to be FUN and ENTERTAINING, Paul guides you through the voice beginning with the PHYSIOLOGY behind singing and completing with PERFORMANCE techniques. During the two days, you are given opportunities to try things out, ask questions, EXPERIMENT and discover NEW and EXCITING exercises designed to take YOUR voice to the NEXT LEVEL. Best of all, you will meet new PEOPLE, see new METHODS and DISCOVER ways to BREAK the HABITS that limit your vocal potential.
The CRASH COURSE IN SINGING goes for two days. Saturday 9am to 10pm, Sunday 9am to around 5. Paul deliberately limits the numbers to only 25. Large enough for you to enjoy a group dynamic and make new friends, small enough to ensure personal attention from the master himself.
- 1. The FIRST SECTION of the course is the introduction phase. Paul goes a little into the psychology behind good vocal techniques. At this time, you’ll be asked a few basic questions like what would you like to get out of this weekend. By the Sunday night, Paul is committed that those questions have been answered. This is also the time to meet the other people who have come! Make new friends, share concepts and help each other grow. Participation is limited at this stage to help you feel at ease. As the day progresses, you’ll be invited to try some new things and become more vocal.
- 2. The SECOND SECTION called EXPLAINING THE INSTRUMENT outlines how your body works when singing. This is where you become familiar with the parts of your anatomy used. Supplemented with lots of diagrams and small exercises used to discover how your body works when it is singing. This is where you have the guesswork removed from your voice because you’ll actually UNDERSTAND what’s going on. Many people have remarked that this section alone was worth the money paid because of the clarity it brings to their knowledge.
- 3. The THIRD SECTION called MAKING THE INSTRUMENT begins to train you in how to use and modify the body to maximize the voice. It is designed very pragmatically so you can develop solid vocal knowledge. This is where many myths and confusions are answered because it gets into things like how to breathe and how the voice creates a great tone. Opportunities are given for you to try new exercises and discover your limitations and how to break them. Paul explains his four pillars of good vocal technique and how to achieve them, then ties them into the previous section.
- 4. The FOURTH SECTION called PLAYING THE INSTRUMENT is where you discover more advanced performance concepts such as how words are formed and how to put it all together. Building on the previous sections, this is where you really begin to see the information take shape. Lots of opportunity is given for singing, exercises, techniques and exploration. Mostly this is done in group but a few lucky people will get the chance to have personal coaching by Paul at this stage.
- 5. The FIFTH SECTION is called PERFORMING THE INSTRUMENT. You will find out techniques to add that special X-Factor to your singing. Learn techniques to add emotion, mic use and lots of practical opportunity. Paul gets into deeper coaching and even if you choose not to perform for the entire course, you will learn a tremendous amount from watching.
- 6. The SIXTH SECTION is called TECHNOLOGY. Here Paul delves into his recording and college teaching experience to deliver some great knowledge regarding the technology used in modern vocal production. This is where you learn about microphones, mixers, compression and effects. Recording concepts are explained and tips given to help you record your next track with more confidence and a better result.
- 7. The SEVENTH SECTION is simply coaching from Paul. Open ended to allow the group to ask anything, do anything, sing anything. The CRASH COURSE has a guitar, keyboard and microphones available to help facilitate this. Additionally, Paul has a selection of backing tracks which you may use to perform with. Or bring your own!
- 8. The EIGHTH SECTION is the conclusion of the weekend. A wrap up of the training, final questions are invited and any loose ends tied up.
