Paul grew up in a very musical family. Inheriting an appreciation for Classical Piano from his Grandmother, a local Piano Teacher. Then fuelled by the support of loving parents, Paul and his siblings all became musicians in their own right. As a child Paul had a prodigious musical talent, initially learning guitar. Within two years, his love for synthesizers and keyboards brought new focus into Electronic Music. By the age of 13, Paul’s desire was to be a successful Singer Songwriter. However, one BIG problem, Paul couldn’t sing! Desperate & obsessed to live his dream, Paul then embarked on a journey involving Vocal Books, Courses and studying under 10 different coaches!

Entering the workforce as a Mechanical Engineer and working as a Technical Officer and Vibration Analyst in power stations. By 1995, he left to focus on Full Time Musical Performance. Entertaining Victoria wide on the Covers Circuit. During these years Paul learnt valuable skills to engage audiences diverse as Pubs & Clubs, AFL teams, Corporate Events and Supporting Acts such as Jimmy Barnes; Burns, Cotton & Morris to name a few.

Paul also developed & owned one of the state’s leading Regional Recording Studios. Producing and Singing many Radio and TV jingles, as well as recording for other artists, Paul’s singing voice has been heard by literally millions of people over the past 10 years. During this time, Paul also devoted time into teaching Recording Techniques, PA, Computer Music and Project Management at a Regional Music College.

Furthermore, five years of training under an internationally renowned Life Management/Coach gave Paul extensive training in both personal & professional development.

In more recent times, Paul has enjoyed singing in front of 8000 people at the 2008 Traralgon Christmas Carols Concert. He has also conducted many Professional Vocal Workshops for schools and churches. Currently, Paul is recording his new signature CD, due to be released in 2010. However it is the phenomenal growth of his individual Vocal Coaching Sessions across Gippsland that continues to fuel his desire to watch the potential of all his students realised.

Coaching As a Career

Paul’s grounding in vocal technique was a combined study of many different teaching styles from various coaches. Each had their own background, expertise & theories; some going as far as incorporating German and Italian languages; adaptation of show tunes and contemporary speech level techniques.

From this experience Paul has developed his own unique teaching method, however it is important to note that all of his techniques are fundamental rather than a ‘patented system’. To explain, Pauls method is logical! It is based upon sound knowledge and application of anatomy and physiology. Everything taught can be demonstrated in everyday use of the voice, which evolves into a clearer understanding of singing rather than being confused by meaningless visualizations.

As a student, Paul’s greatest battle was resolving naturally occurring vocal flaws. It was difficult to find someone who could not only recognise them, but train out the faults. With many areas of concern, including; pitch; breathing; tension; and constantly blowing his voice hoarse; Paul is living testimony to great coaching, having overcome several of the vocal flaws he now sees in his clients. Unlike a ‘natural born singer’ who teaches, Paul really understands the frustration of searching for the breakthroughs and is overjoyed to watch his student’s voice blossom, from which he gains great personal satisfaction.

Paul’s style is to always keep the session light and fun, but impart accurate and effective knowledge and training. Understanding the embarrassment of a beginner, he aims to minimise intimidation and nerves during all sessions.

To conclude, Paul is obsessed with continual improvement rather than method focussed. Any new idea, technique or exercise which facilitates greater vocal ease or improving an individual’s voice is adopted with enthusiasm. It’s all about achieving the best possible results for every client, based purely on their aspirations & commitment level.

- Would you love to add power and range to your voice?

Here’s another……..
Would you like to:

OK, So I answered yes to a couple of things on the checklist,
what is the workshop all about?

This Paul Sykes Vocal Seminar is a combination of Power Point visuals, Practical demonstration, live coaching and audio examples. Designed to be FUN and ENTERTAINING, Paul guides you through the voice beginning with the PHYSIOLOGY behind singing and completing with PERFORMANCE techniques. During the two days, you are given opportunities to try things out, ask questions, EXPERIMENT and discover NEW and EXCITING exercises designed to take YOUR voice to the NEXT LEVEL. Best of all, you will meet new PEOPLE, see new METHODS and DISCOVER ways to BREAK the HABITS that limit your vocal potential.

The CRASH COURSE IN SINGING goes for two days. Saturday 9am to 10pm, Sunday 9am to around 5. Paul deliberately limits the numbers to only 25. Large enough for you to enjoy a group dynamic and make new friends, small enough to ensure personal attention from the master himself.

1. The FIRST SECTION of the course is the introduction phase. Paul goes a little into the psychology behind good vocal techniques. At this time, you’ll be asked a few basic questions like what would you like to get out of this weekend. By the Sunday night, Paul is committed that those questions have been answered. This is also the time to meet the other people who have come! Make new friends, share concepts and help each other grow. Participation is limited at this stage to help you feel at ease. As the day progresses, you’ll be invited to try some new things and become more vocal.

2. The SECOND SECTION called EXPLAINING THE INSTRUMENT outlines how your body works when singing. This is where you become familiar with the parts of your anatomy used. Supplemented with lots of diagrams and small exercises used to discover how your body works when it is singing. This is where you have the guesswork removed from your voice because you’ll actually UNDERSTAND what’s going on. Many people have remarked that this section alone was worth the money paid because of the clarity it brings to their knowledge.

3. The THIRD SECTION called MAKING THE INSTRUMENT begins to train you in how to use and modify the body to maximize the voice. It is designed very pragmatically so you can develop solid vocal knowledge. This is where many myths and confusions are answered because it gets into things like how to breathe and how the voice creates a great tone. Opportunities are given for you to try new exercises and discover your limitations and how to break them. Paul explains his four pillars of good vocal technique and how to achieve them, then ties them into the previous section.

4. The FOURTH SECTION called PLAYING THE INSTRUMENT is where you discover more advanced performance concepts such as how words are formed and how to put it all together. Building on the previous sections, this is where you really begin to see the information take shape. Lots of opportunity is given for singing, exercises, techniques and exploration. Mostly this is done in group but a few lucky people will get the chance to have personal coaching by Paul at this stage.

5. The FIFTH SECTION is called PERFORMING THE INSTRUMENT. You will find out techniques to add that special X-Factor to your singing. Learn techniques to add emotion, mic use and lots of practical opportunity. Paul gets into deeper coaching and even if you choose not to perform for the entire course, you will learn a tremendous amount from watching.

6. The SIXTH SECTION is called TECHNOLOGY. Here Paul delves into his recording and college teaching experience to deliver some great knowledge regarding the technology used in modern vocal production. This is where you learn about microphones, mixers, compression and effects. Recording concepts are explained and tips given to help you record your next track with more confidence and a better result.

7. The SEVENTH SECTION is simply coaching from Paul. Open ended to allow the group to ask anything, do anything, sing anything. The CRASH COURSE has a guitar, keyboard and microphones available to help facilitate this. Additionally, Paul has a selection of backing tracks which you may use to perform with. Or bring your own!

8. The EIGHTH SECTION is the conclusion of the weekend. A wrap up of the training, final questions are invited and any loose ends tied up.

If you love singing, always interested in being better at it, stuck with some vocal limitations or simply looking for additional information and skills, the PAUL SYKES CRASH COURSE IN SINGING is an absolute essential weekend for you … Book NOW!

“Thanks so much for your enthusiasm, patience and inspiration. I started off feeling apologetic about wanting to learn how to sing properly, as I had been told that I sounded like a cat being strangled. I really didn’t think I had much of a voice, just in my imagination.

It sounds like a whopping big cliche, but I feel that so many possibilities are opening up now. You are teaching me the nuts and bolts of singing, but in a way that builds my skills without confusing me with too much detail. You make learning fun, and yes, I can say that my lesson is a true high point of my week. Everyone has a voice, often hidden away. It takes real talent for someone to gently perservere in revealing that voice, and you certainly are doing that. Thanks again,” – Jane

“After receiving my first lesson with Paul Sykes, I was shown the anatomy behind singing. I have been seeing Paul for nearly 6 months now and have gained confidence through not just singing but stage performance and recording. Paul’s wide range of knowledge has given me an insight into the music industry. He has changed the psychology behind my singing and look forward to everything else he has to offer in the future.” – Danni Teychenne

Doing pub gigs used to leave my voice sore and tired but through his techniques and brilliant knowledge of the voice i am starting to learn that it doesn’t have to be a strain to be a singer, especially a good singer. I look forward to each lesson as i endeavor to learn more of these fantastic methods. I advise anyone who’s remotely interested in singing to give Paul Sykes a try, he’s a very easy going teacher.” – Marc Galletti
